Washington DC Metro map: Washington Metro is the rapid transit system of Washington DC and the neighboring suburban communities in Virginia and Maryland, both inside and outside the capital Beltway. This metro service in Maryland is provided in Prince George’s County and Montgomery. It extends to Arlington County, City of Alexandria and Fairfax County in Virginia. The rail fleet of this metro system consists of 952 75-foot rail cars, delivered in five shipments. Rohr Industries manufactured the original order of 300 rail cars. The delivery of these railcars was done in 1976. These are numbered 1000-1299. Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie and Metro at the Brentwood Shop in Washington rehabilitated the railcars in the mid 1990’s. Washington DC Metro System: Order maintenance and customer safety were some of the considerations of the Metro designers while designing the Washington DC Metro system. Metro is continuously patrolled by its police force. Strict laws have been made for any criminal related activities. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) owns and operates Metro rail system and the Metro (Bus) network. There is a paratransit system meant for the disabled, known as MetroAccess. This system is also operated by WMATA. Passengers entering the Washington D.C. Metro system can transfer between the trains for free as long as they remain within the fare control area. Passengers who transfer from Metrorail to Metrobus are offered a discount of 35 cents on regular routes. There is a discount of 2.10 dollars on express routes by Metro.

Washington D.C. Metrorail network: The Washington D.C. Metrorail network was designed with a spoke-hub distribution paradigm. This makes the subway ideal for getting from a suburb to any part of the city. But it is not very suitable for suburb-to-suburb traveling. There are a limited number of lines that nevertheless make extensive use f interlining. There are five operating lines and two planned lines. As far as the operation and signaling of the Washington D.C, Metrorail is concerned, the trains during normal operation on revenue tracks are controlled by automatic train operation. This operation accelerates and brakes the train automatically without the intervention of any operator.

Washington D.C. Metro station: Washington D.C. Metro Subway network was opened in 1976 and since then it has grown to five lines, 86 stations and 106.3 miles. The original plan consisted of 83 stations on 103 miles and was completed on 13 January 2001. Currently there are Metro stations in Columbia district. This is an underground station although most of the stations are on elevated rails. The deepest Washington D.C. Metro stations are not in Washington. They are located in the Northeastern end of the Red Line. Though the Metro system is not centered on a single station, the Metro Center is the busiest station and even considered as the hub. This is located at the intersection of three busiest lines. Stadium Armory, located by RFK Stadium, L’Enfant Plaza and Gallery Place, located at Verizon Center are some of the important transfer stations. L’Enfant Plaza is the only station in the system that has four lines and supplies easy access between Washington and Virginia. The platforms of the stations are built away from the station walls. This has been done to limit vandalism and to provide for diffused station lighting from recessed lights. The Washington Metro is considered to be the safest and the cleanest subway systems in the United States. Crime prevention was kept in mind while designing the stations. Harry Weese, a Chicago architect designed the Washington Metrorail. This popular design is an exemplar of the late 20th century modern architecture.
