New Mexico: The Real Spanish Home: By the time Spaniards set foot on New Mexico, it was already the home to another group of people, the Pueblos. Indeed, Santa Fe itself is believed to have been an ancient settlement of the Pueblo people in New Mexico. However, when the Spanish first came expecting gold and riches, they found only the Pueblo. Their mistreatment of the Pueblo people during these early years as they quested after the Seven Cities of Cibola proved to infuriate the Pueblos and led to hostility which hampered the Spanish conquest of New Mexico. For real, New Mexico was found to not have the much spoken of Seven Cities of Cibolo, however no more than five decades later, the first permanent European settlement would be established, and a bit more than a decade later, Santa Fe was founded as the seat of government for New Mexico, a title that it has held up to this day as the capital of New Meixco. The rest, as they say, is history.
The City Different of Santa Fe, New Mexico: In Spanish, Santa Fe quite literally means "Holy Faith", an abbreviation of it's full name, "La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis" which means "Royal City of Holy Faith of St. Francis of Asisi". Santa Fe, New Mexico has long been the seat of government for the region, with the exception of a short period following the Pueblos revolt. The city itself is a thing of beauty, with everything road centered around the central Plaza. Following the Pueblos Revival period, Santa Fe redesigned itself in the look of the original New Mexico inhabitants, the Pueblos. It soon became law that new and rebuilt buildings must all follow this style, turning the city into something "different" and giving it the nickname it is still known by to this very day.
Roswell Crash - Events that Put New Mexico on the Map: In the Chaves county of New Mexico there is a place called Roswell. Roswell is probably the single most famous New Mexican City, and has quite literally put New Mexico on the map in term of world fame. It is famous not for it's former military importance per se, which ended in 1967 with the decommissioning of the Walker Air Base, but rather it is famous because purportedly in July 1947, a UFO crashed nearby. Supposedly, it left a large field of debris, which was investigated by the military from the Walker Air Base. The U.S. Army stated that they had recovered a "flying disc" and this sent a wave of interest across the country, and even the world. Subsequently it was announced that it had been a weather balloon that had crashed. This event would be visited and revisited up till today, as Roswell now holds a legendary status as one of the largest conspiracy theories that has ever existed. The truth behind Roswell may perhaps never be known. But regardless of whether there was a military cover up or not, the interest that Roswell has generated as a name in itself has been enough to put it on the map of New Mexico, and the world. Indeed, today, there are many businesses dedicated to the "Roswell Crash Incident" and sell merchandise in an alien-like theme.
The Universities and the People - New Mexico: As It Is New Mexico today has the highest Hispanic population of any of the US states, it also has the second highest percentage of Native Americans. This blend of cultural influences can be felt strongly throughout the state, and many feel that New Mexico is all the richer for it. Also, over time various Universities have sprung up around New Mexico, the most notable being the Eastern New Mexico University, the New Mexico State University, and the University of New Mexico. In fact, the Eastern New Mexico University even has a branch in the famous city of Roswell, and another branch in the less known city of Ruidoso. Even as New Mexico moves forward with further development of infrastructure and also the establishment of fine institutions of further education such as those above, it is pleasant to note that it retains much of its heritage, and indeed, takes steps to preserve it as with Santa Fe and the Pueblos style.
