Mediterranean map – about the Mediterranean Sea: The Mediterranean Sea is a large body of water that is linked to the Atlantic Ocean by the 9-mile wide Strait of Gibraltar. The Mediterranean Sea is also known as an Inland Sea, and its name literally translates to mean ‘middle of the land’. If one were to look at the Mediterranean map, one would see that the Mediterranean Sea is almost completely enclosed by land.

On the Mediterranean map, you can see that Europe surrounds the Mediterranean Sea on its north, Africa on its south and Asia on the eastern side. It is also sometimes called Eurafrican Mediterranean Sea or the European Mediterranean Sea to distinguish it from other Mediterranean seas. The Mediterranean Sea is a large body of water, covering 2,509,000 sq km, with an east to west extent of 3,900 km and a width of 1,600 km. It’s a relatively shallow sea, with its average depth reaching 4,900ft.

The Mediterranean map and its region: Evident on the Mediterranean map, is the Mediterranean region. This region is called the Mediterranean basin. The countries in the region on the Mediterranean map are Europe, Asia and Africa. The climate of this region is typically mild, with rainy winters and hot, dry summers.

The geographical features of the Mediterranean region and basin are simple. On the North, there is Europe along with 3 large peninsulas, the Iberian Peninsula, Italy and the Balkan Peninsula. On the East is western Asia along with the Anatolian peninsula, and on the south there is the Northwestern part of Africa along with the Sahara desert and the peninsula of Cyrenaica in Libya. The Mediterranean basin was formed by the collision of the African-Arabian continent with the Eurasian continent.

The Ancient Mediterranean Map: To understand the Mediterranean map as it is today requires us to know about its ancient history. The region’s ancient history explains how the modern Mediterranean map came about.

As was mentioned earlier, the Mediterranean basin was created by the collision of the Afro-Arabian continent with the Eurasian Continent. This created the Mediterranean basin and also resulted in the split of the Eurasian continent, resulting in Europe and Asia.

Ancient Mediterranean history was predominantly dominated by the Greek, Roman and Egyptian empires. The development of cultures such as the Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Phoenician, Jewish, Greek, Latin, Arab, Persian and Turkish also is based on the cultures of the Mediterranean region. The Mediterranean culture has also played a vital role in the Western civilization as we know it today. According to ancient history, the earliest civilizations on earth can be traced back to the Mediterranean region.

The Mediterranean Map and its area: The area of the Mediterranean basin as seen on the Mediterranean map covers an area of 2085292 sq km. But only 98009 sq km of this is undisturbed and untouched. The area that is referred to as the Mediterranean basin on the Mediterranean map is the region that outlines the Mediterranean sea and has classic features like the climate from the Mediterranean sea.
