Hawaiian island map: Hawaiian Island was once known as the Sandwich Islands. It forms an archipelago (a chain of islands) of nineteen islands and atolls, several undersea seamounts and small islets trending northwest by southeast in the North Pacific Ocean. This chain of island is named after the largest island in the Hawaiian group and goes on to around 1500 miles from the Hawaiian island in the south to the northernmost Kure Atoll. Creation of Hawaiian Islands: Hawaiian Islands are said to be volcanic in nature but they are situated in the center of the pacific plate than at the active edge. Each island has at least one primary volcano but the Big Island has 5 major volcanoes. The primary volcanoes are known as shield volcanoes. In the west of Hawaii there is a continuous undersea peak chain along the pacific floor from Hawaii to Alaska. These are seamounts; undersea peaks that might have reached above the sea level and formation of the Hawaiian Islands took place. Now they are worn away and do not appear above the sea level. The creation of Hawaiian island is very interesting. They are believed to be the trace of a “hot spot”. Hot spots are places from where lava comes through the crust of the earth. Peaks are formed when the crustal plates pass over the hot spot. The motion of the plates carries them and new peaks are formed by the hot spots. The “Big Island” of Hawaii has a volcanic activity and it has the youngest rock in the islands. Other islands do not have an active volcano and they are smaller in size. An undersea volcano near Hawaii has formed a mountain whose tip does not reach the sea level. However, there are chances of creation of a new Hawaiian island in the future when it rises above the sea level.
