Denver’s Downtown Aquarium: Denver’s downtown aquarium in Colorado is considered the largest aquarium between California and Chicago. Initially a non-profit entity, it was founded by Bill Fleming and Judy Peterson Fleming, by the name of Colorado’s Ocean Journey. It was partially funded by a 57 million dollar bond loan, and loans from the department of Housing and Urban Development. It was later renamed Denver Aquarium, when Ripley’s Entertainment, Landry’s Restaurants Inc. purchased it for 13.6 million dollars in 2003. The main building of the Denver Aquarium downtown sits on a 17-acre piece of land, adjacent to the South Platte River.

Denver Aquarium’s ocean journey: Denver Aquarium’s ocean journey is a worthwhile experience. The original journey paths are no longer in an exact zoogeographic pattern. After the renovation, a full service restaurant, ballroom and bar have been added to make the Denver Aquarium’s ocean journey experience even more interesting for visitors. The first pathway gives visitors an opportunity to see various types of river fish. Catfish, trout, bass and the amazing Desert Pupfish are displayed in the bright aquaria. The salinity level here can be three times greater than that of the sea, and there is a wide fluctuation in water temperature. There are a series of large landscaped aquaria where even birds, ducks and reptiles are featured. Many of these have terrarium surroundings. You can also spot diving ducks, beavers and northern river otters. The journey to Denver Aquarium will also give you the chance to view a variety of Pacific Ocean fish, once the river expedition reaches the sea. The second river journey takes visitors down to the Kampar River that drops into an emerald tropical rainforest. This journey used to have exhibits of endangered Sumatran tigers, Asian arowanas, rainbow fish and several other species. Today, the tanks on this second pathway depict South American and African fresh water ecosystems. The otter exhibit has been removed to set up the restaurant tank.
