Britain was the name given by the Romans to the island that unites modern day England, Wales and Scotland. The name is derived from the Latin name Britannia. England used to be known as Engla land, meaning the land of the Angles-the people from the Germany, who began to invade Britain along with the Saxons.
Northern Ireland: The names of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland are shortened to ‘United Kingdom’, UK or Britain. The United Kingdom is a political union that is made up of four constituents, namely Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland. Being a part of an administrative division of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland was defined by the Government of Ireland Act, 1920 and after that it has had its own government, similar to the ones in Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has been for many years a site of bitter political conflicts between the Nationalists, the Catholics who want it to be unified with the Republic of Ireland and those claiming to be Unionists, the Protestants who want it to be independent. The campaign is popularly known as ‘The Troubles’. After the signing of the United Kingdom Belfast Agreement in 1998, many paramilitary campaigns have ceased.
History of the Making of United Kingdom: The Kingdom of Great Britain is also known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Originally, it was a state within Western Europe and it came into existence in 1707. The name was the result of the merger of the Kingdom of Scotland and the Kingdom of England, under the Act of Union, 1707. The Kingdom of Great Britain was renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801, when the Kingdom of Ireland was absorbed under the Act of Union 1800, after the suppression of the Irish rebellion in 1798.

England is the most popular and the largest territory within Great Britain, comprising of the south and east. Wales lies in the east and Scotland is to the north. Northern Island is located at the northeast corner of Ireland. The climate is very mild, sometimes chilly and wet. The rainfall is unpredictable, 300 days a year. These conditions make Great Britain lush and full of greenery. Despite its small size, Great Britain is densely populated, with a population density of 251 persons per sq km.
The Kingdom of Scotland: The Kingdom of Scotland was independent till 1 May 1707. The Act of Union resulted in the merger of Scotland with the Kingdom of England, to create the Kingdom of Great Britain. Scotland is no longer a sovereign state and it does not affect the membership of either the United Nations or the European Union. The Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland or the CGCS is a national sports organization that is responsible for promoting the teams and athletes from Scotland at the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games.
