History of the Olympic Airlines: Olympic Airlines initially went bankrupt due to financial issues and the narrow outlook of the Greek, towards air transport. In 1947, three airline companies, Technical and Aeronautical Exploitations, G.A.T. and Hellenic Airlines were launched. Owing to acute financial crisis, it was decided to bring about a merger between the three. However, the new airline also faced the same fate and had to close down in 1955. The company operated under the name of T.A.E. till the end of the year and Olympic Airlines was officially born on 6 April 1957.
Olympic Airlines in the initial years: The Olympic Airlines operations developed very fast and its first jet aircraft started service in 1960. Around the same time, the Olympic and British airlines decided to start the first code-share flight. Gradually, the companies expanded their collaboration. The first order for a Boeing 707-300 jet aircraft was placed in 1965. It was delivered in 1966, under the name of ‘City of Corinth’.
It purchased the NAMC YS-11 turboprop aircraft to substitute the old Douglas DC-3 and Douglas DC-6 in 1970. Olympic Aviation was formed in 1971, to connect the Greek islands well. It purchased the Boeing 720-051B jet aircraft in collaboration with an Australian company in 1972. Olympic Airlines bought the Boeing 737-200 jet aircraft in 1976 and created Olympic Catering, under the rules and regulations of the state government. It served both Olympic as well as other foreign airlines. In 1984, OA bought two more B747-200 aircrafts from Singapore Airlines. However, the company entered troubled waters in 1980 and the phase continued till 2003. Finally, the government decided to restructure the company, to erase all the debts.
