FIFA Soccer World Ranking: FIFA stands for Federation Internationale de Football Association. The FIFA Soccer World Ranking is a system used to grade the men’s national soccer teams of member nations of FIFA, according to their success rates in international soccer game tournaments. FIFA, which is the international governing body of football, gives the highest rank to the most successful team. The ranks are given using a points system, which are awarded according to the results of the matches conducted by FIFA. The FIFA Soccer World Ranking rules are designed to accord more weight to recent and more significant matches to determine the rankings, in order to show the current competitive status of each team. The FIFA Soccer World Ranking system was first introduced in August 1993, with Coca-Cola as the sponsor. However, Coca-Cola does not have any say in determining the world ranking.

FIFA Soccer World Ranking 2006: Initially, FIFA Soccer World Ranking was based on a rather simplistic method to grade teams. The rules for FIFA Soccer World Ranking were similar to that of the traditional league system of scoring, awarding three points for a win and one point for a draw, in FIFA-recognized matches. As FIFA realized that this system of ranking did not reflect the real strength of a team in international matches, it went ahead with modifications to the FIFA Soccer World Ranking system, first in 1999, and then in 2006. By the end of the year 2005, FIFA staff and external experts devised a new procedure for FIFA Soccer World Ranking. The modified FIFA Soccer World Ranking system of 2006 was applied right after the FIFA World Cup 2006, to declare the FIFA Soccer World Ranking on 12th July 2006. The significant changes in the FIFA Soccer World Ranking 2006 are that it will no longer take into consideration the last eight matches to determine ranking, but only the last four. Other rules have also been simplified, and most of the complications of the points system have been done away with or changed. The other major changes have been in the calculation criteria for the strength of the opponent, importance of the match, regional strength and the number of matches considered per year.

FIFA Soccer World Cup: The international soccer competition held under the aegis of FIFA is called FIFA Soccer World Cup, or simply the World Cup. Men’s national football teams of member nations compete for attaining the highest slot in the tournament. The FIFA Soccer World Cup tournament has been held once every four years since 1930, barring 1942 and 1946, when it was not possible to arrange the tournament because of the Second World War. The most exciting phase of the tournament is during the final matches, known as the World Cup Finals. FIFA Soccer World Cup Finals are held over a period of approximately a month, with thirty-two national teams participating in the event. The selection of the participating teams is on the basis of qualifying rounds held over the last three years before the world cup finals.

2006 FIFA Soccer World Cup: The 2006 FIFA Soccer World Cup was the eighteenth such tournament organized by FIFA. Held in Germany from 9th of June to 9th of July, the 2006 FIFA Soccer World Cup was won by Italy by defeating the French team. Portugal finished third after suffering a 3-1 defeat by Germany. One hundred and ninety eight nations participated in the qualifying rounds for the 2006 FIFA Soccer World Cup tournament.

Soccer is a game that is loved by millions of fans the world over. Video games like the FIFA Soccer 2004, which was developed by EA Canada in2003, geared towards the forthcoming World Cup in 2004, testify to the immense popularity of the sport. FIFA, an international body headquartered in Switzerland, is responsible for the governance and organization of international Soccer tournaments.
