St. Petersburg Times newspaper: St. Petersburg Times, initially known as West Hillsborough Times, was launched in the role of a country weekly newspaper, in Dunedin on July 25, 1884. Thid newspaper belonged to A.C. Turner till December 1884, but in 1892 R.J. Morgan purchased it for a price ,200, and shifted the newspaper to St. Petersburg. It was renamed the St. Petersburg Times. It was again sold to Ira J. Gore, who managed it till his dying days (1900). After a year, a company operated by W.L. Straub bought the St. Petersburg Times newspaper. In 1907, the newspaper turned into a semi-weekly and later into a ‘six-days a week’ newspaper, selling copies everyday, except Mondays.
A publisher by the name of Paul Poynter, belonging to Indiana was impressed by the prospective of the St. Petersburg Times and bought it in 1912. The Times Publishing Company was set up in September 1912, headed by Poynter, the president whereas Straub was the editor and vice-president. The newspaper started publishing for seven days a week and later in 1924, wheras in 1927, it was shifted to a new building.
In 1969, after Paul Poynter’s, his son Nelson Poynter took over the Times Publishing Company as a chairperson. For the very first time the readers of Times got offset printed newspapers. This was credited to the installation of ten units of Goss Metro. News bureaus were launched in 1972, in Brooksville, Inverness and Dade City along with the existing Clearwater and Port Richey bureaus. In 1984 and then in 1997, Times was rated among the ten best newspapers in America, by the TIME magazine. They referred to the newspaper as the most resourceful.
