Mumbai Samachar Newspaper: Mumbai Samachar, formerly known, as the Bombay Samachar, is the oldest newspaper in Asia. It is one of the most trusted newspapers of Mumbai that is published in Gujrati. A dedicated journalist of Parsi origin, named Fardoonjee Marzban, founded this newspaper on July 1, 1822. The Mumbai Samachar started its publication in Gujarati and English as a weekly newspaper. Later, it turned into a bi-weekly in 1832, and then finally became a daily newspaper in 1855. It is the first vernacular newspaper in Bombay. Though it is not the first newspaper in an Indian language, Mumbai Samachar continues to be published under the same title, and hence, is considered the oldest newspaper in India, and one of the oldest newspapers in the world. There is no trace of this newspaper’s first 122 years, as its filming began only in 1944.
Right from the period of British rule, Mumbai Samachar formed an integral part of the growth and development of Mumbai. Even the British respected it for its fair, frank and objective analysis, as well as criticism of events. It played a significant role in the Indian struggle for independence.
