United States Immigration And Naturalization Services: The USCIS, also known as the United States Immigration and Naturalization Services, is a bureau that operates, and functions under the DHS or the Department of Homeland Security. It has been assigned the tasks of the INS, or United States Immigration and Naturalization Service, which was previously a part of the Department of Justice. When the INS used to operate under the United States Department of Justice, this administrative organization of the government was responsible for handling both legal as well as illegal immigration, and naturalization matters. However, on 1 March 2003, the President of the United States, Mr. George Bush, transferred its functions to the USCIS. The administration of immigration matters like permanent and temporary residence, naturalization, refugees, and other relevant immigration services became the sole responsibility of the USCIS. Before the USCIS changed to its present name, it was known as the BCIS, or the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. The other functions of the INS, other than immigration services, were also transferred to two new agencies under the DHS that were created along with the USCIS. Functions like investigativion and enforcement were amalgamated with US Custom Investigators, Federal Protective Service and Federal Air Marshal Service to create a new agency known as ICE, or the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Border patrolling, including the inspectors from INS and US Customs, were merged into a governmental union called CBP or the US Customs and Border Protection. The Canadian laws of immigration are very different from those of United States.

Department Of Justice Services: The DOJ, or the Department of Justice, is an administrative and judicial unit of the United States government. The primary role of the DOJ is enforcement of the laws within the country, and to operate in the interest of its citizens and the country. As an executive department, the responsibility of the DOJ is to ensure impartial justice for all the citizens of America. In March 2003, the governmental agency, the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service, was uprooted and all its functions were channelized to a newly created United States Department of Homeland Security. However, the executive office for Immigration Review and the Board of Immigration Appeals, which evaluate decisions pertaining to immigration services and operate under the Immigration and Nationality Law, are still under the jurisdiction of the United States Department of Justice.

Thus, while earlier, the INS, which operated under the Department of Justice, was responsible for executing immigration services, now the newly created USCIS serves the same purpose. Hence, instead of the INS, operating under the Department of Justice, the USCIS, which operates under the DHS, manages immigration services and other relevant matters. The prime role of the USCIS is to maintain national security and reduce immigration backlogs. It also processes the visa petitions of immigrants, and naturalization petitions. In addition, it reviews applications for asylum and refugees, and takes adjudicative decisions.

Immigration Services In New Zealand: INZ, or Immigration New Zealand, is a part of the New Zealand Department of Labor, which provides immigration services. As a part of its immigration services, the INZ officials can issue visas and permits in order to permit a person to enter the country. According to the immigration act of 1987, a visa implies permission to travel to New Zealand, whereas a permit means permission by the official authorities to be in the country. Permits lose their validity as soon as the holder leaves the country. The various types of visas include visitor’s visa, work visa, student visa, residence visa, and transit visa. The different types of permits include visitor permit, work permit, student permit, and residence permit. People in special circumstances or holding certain positions may be exempted from these requirements, and visa and permit formalities.
