Government houston...

Houston City is the largest city in Texas and the fourth largest in the United States. After the Texas revolution, two New York real estate promoters John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen were looking for a location to build a center for commerce and government. In August 1836, they purchased 6,642 acres of land from T.F.L Parrot, who was John Austin’s widow for ,428 and built this city. This great city was named after Sam Houston, the hero of San Jacinta whom the Allen brothers admired and anticipated being the first president of the Republic of Texas.

Initially, the city started off as a hamlet and later the population-swelled to thousands. Laura, the first ship to visit Houston and Galveston arrived in January 1837. Lawlessness, disease and financial problems prompted Houstonians to end this problem and they wanted a Chamber of Commerce in the city. In 1840, Houston town was divided into four wards and each ward had different functions in the community. These wards were no longer political divisions, but their names were still used. The Texas Government thus started to promote colonization of the state.
