Greyhound Bus Lines: Greyhound Bus Lines is considered to be the largest inter-city carrier of passengers in North America. It serves around 2,200 destinations in the United States of America. It was founded in 1914 in Hibbing, Minnesota, and was incorporated as ‘The Greyhound Corporation’ in 1926. Greyhound Bus line services is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, for its United States operations, and Calgary, Alberta, for its Canadian operations, and is a subsidiary of the publicly traded bus operator Laidlaw.

The world-famous Greyhound of today is the result of a century’s expansion and acquisition. With this fast expansion of the Greyhound Lines, the Interstate Commerce Commission encouraged small, independent operators to form the National Trailways Bus System in the 1920s and 1930s, as competition.

Carl Wickman is one of the main names in the making of the Greyhound bus lines. He was the first president of this bus service. He was born in 1887 in Sweden. After moving to the US in 1914, he started a bus service for the iron ore miners, whom he transported from Hibbing to Alice, charging 15 cents per ride. Wickman joined forces with Ralph Bogan in 1915, who ran a similar service from Hibbing to Duluth. The name of the new organization was the Mesaba Transportation Company, and it made a handsome profit of around ,000 in its first year.

Wickman owned 18 buses by the end of the First World War, earning a profit of ,000 per year. He joined up with Orville Caesar, the owner of the Superior White Bus Lines in 1992. After four years, Wickman made an agreement with two West Coast operations, namely the Pickwick Lines and the Pioneer Yelloway System. In 1926, he renamed his company to the Greyhound Lines. Wickman continued expanding the bus services, and by 1927 his buses started making transcontinental trips from California to New York.

The Greyhound Lines made a profit of over million in 1935. By the time of the outbreak of World War II, the company had 4,750 stations and about 10,000 employees. It was one of the most profitable bus operations, and it used its profits to invest in other industries. Greyhound moved its headquarters to Phoenix, Arizona, by the 1970s, by which time it had evolved into a large company with diverse holdings in various enterprises ranging from the Armour meat-packing company and the Traveller’s Express money orders, to the MCI bus manufacturing company and airliner leasing. Greyhound established the Premier Cruise Line in 1983.

In 2004, the company announced major schedule reductions in its route system, especially in the northwest and north-central United States, as well as elimination of some long distance routes. Greyhound constantly works on improving its bus services, thereby enhancing its image.
