America West Airlines: It is a part of the US Airways Group, and is one of the ten major airlines of the United States. America West is based in Tempe, Arizona. McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Arizona are the two hubs maintained by America West Airlines. In addition, through its merger with US Airways, it also has hubs at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport, and focus cities in Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Pittsburgh International Airport. America West Airlines is the second largest low cost airline in US, providing services to approximately 100 destinations in Canada, United States and Mexico, and code sharing arrangements are used to cater to Europe. This airline was established in February 1981 and began functioning on 1 August 1983. Initially, passengers could buy tickets on board. America West started with three Boeing 737s, and quickly expanded to 11 aircrafts, operating flights to 13 cities, and developed a hub in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1983. By 1984, it grew to 21 aircrafts and 23 cities. America West Holdings Corporation announced its merger with US Airways group on 19 May 2005. US Airways was the name given to the new entity that is headquartered in the former corporate offices of America West Airlines. The merger was completed on 27 September 2005. America West Arena, now known as US Airways Center, is an entertainment and sports facility in Phoenix, Arizona.

America West uses QIK computer reservations: QIK (Qantas Intelligent Keypad) computer reservation system is used by America West Airlines. It is an airline agent application that was developed in the 1980’s in order to front end mainframe reservation. QIK is an acronym derived from its use of a separate keypad attached to the keyboard. The keys on the pad were used as function keys. Later, the physical keyboard was replaced with a logical one, which was represented on the user’s screen as a quadrant, mapped to the standard QWERTY keyboard keys. QIK encapsulates airline business rules in a smart application that is PC based, and sends the required transactions to the host or the airline mainframe for processing. Qantas formed a joint venture with DMR Consulting in the 1990s to market QIK under the name of Qadrant International. America West uses QIK computer reservations system, which relies on Amadeus and Shares, while Sabre is used by US Airways. Since America West Airline uses QIK computer reservation system, it expects the US Airways to be converted to it by 2007.
