Yellow Labrador retriever: The Labrador is considered the most popular breed of dog. The origin of this energetic and intelligent breed can be traced back to the 1700s in Newfoundland, Canada. They were used by the fishermen of the Labrador Sea to retrieve the fishing nets to the men on shore. Labradors come in black, chocolate and yellow color. Although not as common and dominant as the Black Lab, the yellow Labrador retriever was also in existence at that time.

According to historic accounts of Labradors, yellow Labs were common and in evidence, before any recorded Labrador breeding started. The first registered yellow Labrador, named Ben of Hyde, was born in Major C.J. Radclyffe’s kennel in 1899. This dog was the outcome of breeding between two black Labradors that belonged to imported stock. Ben went on to produce yellow labs when he was bred with black bitches. The Yellow Labrador was simply culled in the earliest years of this breed, eventually however this breed came to be accepted as adhering to the same standard as black Labradors.

Yellow Labrador puppy: Lighter Labrador variants are a recessive trait; hence, in order to get a yellow Labrador puppy, two dogs with those traits are required to be bred. The difference in the coat color of this breed is due to a phenotypical outcome, unlike the other colored varieties. There are two distinct yellows that have different genetic combinations of color. A yellow Labrador dog with one or two encoded black genes will have a black pigment on its coat. Whereas, a yellow Lab with two encoded chocolate genes will have a chocolate pigment. This is also known as a “Dudley”, and the pigmentation can vary from dark brown on a dark yellow, or flesh color on a light yellow coat. This combination is a result of breeding, and depends on the colors of the Dam and Sire. For instance, you can produce a black-pigmented yellow Lab dog or a chocolate-pigmented yellow, by breeding two black Labradors.

Yellow Labradors have variations of shading on their back, eyes and under parts. The nose of yellow Labs fade to pink – also known as “winter” or “snow” nose – due to age. This is inevitable in this breed and is caused by the breakdown of the pigment producing tyrosinase enzyme.
