Dog Vaccination Schedule: Vaccinating a dog is easy and a lot of time and money can be saved by vaccinating the dog at homes. Dog vaccines are of two kinds like modified live and killed. The stronger and longer-lasting rapid protection without maternal antibodies is given by the modified live vaccine. The lower immune response is produced by the killed vaccine which also requires booster vaccinations to confer enough protection. The condition of the dog before vaccination must be normal without any internal or external parasites. The dog should be worm, flea and tick free. The 5 way dog vaccines include Distemper, Parvovirus, Adenovirus, Hepatitis, and Parainfluenza. If Coronavirus is also added, it becomes a 6 way vaccine. The 7 way dog vaccines include Distemper, Parvovirus, Adenovirus, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, and 2 strains of Lepto. If Coronavirus is added it becomes an 8 way vaccine. The dog vaccination schedule will be as follows.
- 6 - 9 weeks: 5 way vaccines
- 12 - 15 weeks: 7 way vaccines
- Adult: 7 way vaccines along with annual booster
Dog Vaccination and Rabies: Rabies is a dangerous virus which affects the nervous system causing encephalitis. This virus is transmitted through the saliva from the bite of an infected animal. The incidence of rabies in human beings is low, but many undergo treatment for the possible exposure. The primary source of rabies is the bite of rabid wild animals like skunk, raccoon, bat and fox. The incubation period of this disease is extremely variable, but normally it is two to eight weeks. The virus starts producing more saliva within short time before clinical signs develop. As per the local rules and regulations, every dog must be vaccinated against rabies. In case of bite by rabid animal, even if the pet has been vaccinated, it should be re-vaccinated and quarantined for 90 days. If the pet has not been vaccinated, it should be euthanized and the tissue should be submitted for rabies testing. If the owner is unwilling to euthanize the pet, it should be strictly quarantined for six months with vaccination one month prior to release. There is no cure for rabies once symptoms have developed, but if the victim is vaccinated promptly after exposure to the disease, immunity can be developed.
Dog Vaccination Record: A health record must be maintained and kept up to date for every dog. Any health problem must be recorded along with the medications suggested by the veterinary doctor. The regular checkups and their details must be recorded. The information such as the allergies related to the dog or allergic to certain medications should also be mentioned in the health record. If there are multiple pets, separate records must be maintained for each pet along with its photograph.
