Chocolate labrador...

Chocolate Labrador retriever: Labrador retrievers have their origin dating back to the 1700’s, in Newfoundland, Canada. They were originally known as the Lesser Newfoundland dog or St. John’s dog. They were the ideal retrievers of fishing nets for the local fishermen and companions for their children. The English Kennel Club recognized this breed in 1903 and registered it as a separate retriever breed. The breed was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1917.

Initially, black and yellow were the dominant Labrador colors. The chocolate Labradors only came to the limelight many decades later. Chocolates were suspected as a genetic mistake. People used to drown them, to wipe them out of the Labrador gene pool. They were discarded and people were prejudiced about their ability to perform well in a show or on the field. In the early 1970’s, it was proved that the chocolate Labrador was a genetically pure breed, just like the black or yellow labs. This brought about a rapid increase in their popularity. The culling of chocolate labs had almost wiped out their recessive genes. Only a few surviving labs were capable of reproducing the breed. Many retriever breeders took to selling any brown dog under the name of a ‘chocolate Labrador’, even if the canine lacked the disposition of a chocolate Labrador retriever.

Scientific breeding of this breed produces good show and hunting dogs, field competitors and family companions. They may vary in shades, light to dark chocolate in color. However, a chocolate Labrador retriever with a brindle or tan mark, is considered a disqualification.
