Bull baiting was the bloody sport in which these dogs were used in the earlier days.

The American Bulldog owes its existence today due to the hard work of John D. Johnson of Summerville, Georgia. This breed also makes a good guard dog, and they were also used for hunting bear, wild boar, squirrels and raccoons.
