Alligator crocodile...
Crocodiles are the most successful predators on earth. Crocs are big aquatic reptiles, which prefer to stay in freshwater habitats like rivers, lakes, and wetlands. However, they are known to venture far out into the sea. They are found on almost every continent on earth. A wildlife TV series The Crocodile Hunter, hosted by Steve Irwin and his wife Terri shows the amazing life of the crocodile world. Alligators belong to the family Alligatoridae, and are darker in color. Presently, Alligators are found only in the US and China. In the US, there are 5 sub species of these animals. You will find alligators and crocodiles living side by side, only in the US. These ancient hunters use their teeth to crush and swallow the kill.
A big difference between an Alligator and a Crocodile: Though they are not easy to spot, there are many differences between an Alligator and a Crocodile. Alligators have wider and shorter heads compared to crocs. They have a broad and mostly u-shaped nose, and more dorsally located eyes than their crocodile cousins. They have an upper jaw that extends beyond the lower jaw. You can see only the upper teeth when the jaws of Alligator are closed. In crocodiles, both upper and lower teeth can be seen when the jaws are closed. Alligators strongly prefer freshwater habitats, as compared to crocs. Crocodiles have special glands that filter out salt; hence, they can tolerate salt water. The eyes of an alligator shine red in the light.
They do not have the jagged fringe, which develops on the hind feet and legs of the crocodile. The alligator’s hind feet toes are webbed half way towards the tips, which is absent in crocs. At present, there are only two species of alligators to be found, one in southern US, and other one in China. One important difference between alligators and crocodiles is that crocodiles are considered more dangerous to humans than the alligators.
Between the alligator and crocodile: Alligators and Crocodiles have a few similarities between them. Both are a part of the reptile family and catch the kill between their powerful jaws. The respiratory and nervous systems are similar. Their hunting patterns are alike.
The arteries and jaws of alligators and crocodiles: Arteries are a part of the vertebrate circulatory system. They are the carriers of blood from the heart. Arteries have elastic and well-built walls. The strong powerful jaws and teeth of crocs are designed to seize and swallow prey when it is small. If it is a larger one, they use their jaws and teeth to crush and tear it up into pieces. Since alligators and crocodiles are predators, it is advised not to encroach into their environment, and always maintain a safe distance.
