After the United States, Japan is the world’s second largest automobile manufacturer and exporter, with six of the ten largest automobile manufacturers being Japanese firms. Japan made a modest beginning with automobile manufacturing during the early years of the twentieth century. The companies were mainly into building trucks, as the demand for passenger cars was very small at that time. The companies would, more often than not, partner with European firms, to produce the cars under license. But the demand for trucks grew manifold during World War II, when they started designing their own trucks. Japan’s auto industry further experienced enormous growth during the Korean War, when they were commissioned to make army trucks by the United States. This was due to Japan’s close proximity to Korea, and also that Japan was still under United States’ occupation since World War II. This was also the time, which saw the industry being consolidated, with the large companies taking over many small companies.

This progress provided tremendous boost to Japanese automakers during the 1960’s, when they launched a series of small cars or “keicars”, as they are known in Japan. They featured small engines ranging from 360 cc to 600 cc, which attracted very low taxes. Thus, a person with an average income could afford a car, which led to the dramatic increase in sales.

Japan has expertise in making cars catering to all conditions, from small family car, to large sedans and luxury vehicles. They also are some of the most economical cars in the world, requiring very little maintenance, and also providing very good miles per gallon of gas. There are various firms and importers who import cars from Japan, especially those that are not officially launched in the United States. Import duties, custom duties and other such taxes will be have to be paid on cars imported from Japan into the United States.

Japanese Car Auctions: Japanese cars can also be bought in auctions. Both new as well as used sales are conducted by the auctioneers. Buying cars from such auctions can prove to be very cheap. A registration has to be made to buy a car, and many sites require the buyer to make a deposit before bidding.
