Avocado tree

Tips for planting seeds and growing your own avocado tree: Keep in mind that the next time you eat an avocado fruit or use it in a recipe, to save the seed. Planting your own avocado tree can be a gratifying and fun experience. Here are a few steps to keep in mind while planting your seeds:
- Hold the avocado seed so that the pointed side faces upwards and insert four toothpicks in the middle of the seed. These have to be inserted at equal intervals at a depth of about 5 mm.
- Fill a glass container with water and suspend the avocado seed in it so that the full width of the seed fits into the container.
- Keep this container in a temperate place, preferably near a window or any well-lit place, so that the growing process begins.
- Change the water every alternate day and make sure that the avocado seed always remains submerged in water.
- Over the next few weeks, the seed’s outer layer will dry up and wrinkle, and eventually fall off. Soon after, the pit will split. After roughly 4 weeks, the taproots will begin to emerge at the base of the seed.
- Water the seed carefully and make sure you don’t injure the roots. After a while the avocado will start sprouting at the top and will release a leaf bud that will slowly open revealing a shoot.
- Once the roots are strong enough and the stem or shoot has grown leaves, your avocado tree is now ready to be planted inside soil. Gently remove this sprouted seed from the container, and let the planting begin!
- Use a terra cotta pot (20-25 cm), filled with rich soil, right up to the top, leaving 2 cm from the rim. Combine a mix of coconut fiber and topsoil for best results. Gently smoothen and pack the soil. Once you have prepared the soil, dig a narrow hole that is deep enough to contain the avocado seed’s roots and pit.
- Gently bury the avocado seed inside the soil in such a way that the upper half peeks out above the surface of the soil. Pack the soil carefully around the seed. And water regularly.
- Once the seed sprouts leaves, keep watering the avocado plant on a daily basis to make sure that the soil is moist at all times. However, do not over water the plant. If the leaves start turning brown, it is a sign that the plant needs more watering. However, if they start yellowing, it indicates that the plant is receiving too much water, and should be allowed to dry out for a few days.
- Keep tending to your plant regularly and in a few years time you will have a low-maintenance as well as attractive avocado tree growing.
