Veteran hospitals are a part of The United States Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). It is a government run health care system and has a cabinet level status. It is the governments second largest department, after the Department of Defense, with a budget of more than billion. It is responsible to provide benefits to veterans, their families and their survivors. It was originally formed on July 21, 1930 and was then known as Veteran Administration or VA. The VA had consolidated the functions of the former US Veterans Bureau, the Bureau of Pensions, and the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. Before this era, the soldiers and the veterans of war did not get any benefits form the government. It was observed that many such veterans took to crime. To avoid such situation, and also to give them due respect for the services rendered, government started giving the veterans various benefits, which, over the time, resulted in forming The US Department of Veteran Affairs. President Regan signed a legislation in 1988 creating a new federal Cabinet-Level Department of Veteran Affairs, which came into effect on January 15, 1989.
Veteran Hospital- Administration: The Secretary of Veterans Affairs heads the Department of Veterans Affairs. Jim Nicholson is the current secretary. The department also has three sub-divisions or administrations, headed by undersecretary.
Veterans Health Administration- It implements the medical assistance program of the VA and looks after various outpatient clinics, hospital, medical centers, and nursing homes.
Veterans Benefits Administration- It provides various benefits and services to veterans and their families including loan guaranty, education, insurance, compensation and pension, vocational rehabilitation, and employment.
National Cemetery Administration- It maintains 123 of 139 national cemeteries across the United States.

Veteran Hospitals Locations in California and Texas: California has Desert Pacific Healthcare Network in Long Beach and Sierra Pacific Network in Mare Island, under the VA. Under these are many medical centers and outpatient clinics and Vet centers. There are medical centers in Fresno, Livermore, Loma Linda, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Palo Alto, Sacramento, San Diego, and San Francisco. There are also many outpatient clinics, community based outpatient clinics and vet centers.
Similar to California, there is a Heart of Texas Health Care Network in Arlington, and also health care system In Amarillo, Big Spring, El Paso, San Antonio and Temple. The medical centers are in Bonham, Dallas, Houston, Kerrville, Temple, and Waco; apart form various outpatient clinic, community based outpatient clinic and vet centers.
