Overactive thyroid

Overactive Thyroid Symptom: Due to some metabolic and genetic factors the THYROID GLANDS in our body start secreting the thyroid hormones in excess. This condition is called hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid and its symptoms include loss of weight (despite taking adequate food), heat intolerance, general weakness, sweating and hyperactivity. Sometimes these symptoms are accompanied by palpitations, nausea, and breathlessness. The symptoms of overactive thyroid glands are also manifested in the form of periodic partial paralysis mayopathy (dysfunction in muscle fibers leading to weakness). Overactive thyroid gland can also contribute for the condition of the cardiac stroke arising primarily out of Arterial defibrillation.
Overactive thyroid gland: Thyrotoxicosis or thyroid poisoning is the alarming condition arising out of excessive concentrations of the thyroid hormones due to overactive thyroid glands. The state of thyrotoxicosis if continued for prolonged durations can prove to be fatal. It has been scientifically established that there is a strong degree of correlation between Overactive Thyroid gland and myasthenia gravis (weakening of muscles), as it has been statistically found that one out of twenty patients of myasthenia gravis is afflicted by condition of overactive thyroid glands.
Treatments for overactive thyroid condition: A lot of research work is being done throughout the world for treatment of overactive thyroid condition as afflictions due to this disease are not only restricted to the third world countries but developed countries too. In fact there are a considerable number of people even in the western world who have been suffering from the disease of hyperthyroidism. As the result there are three groups under which the treatments can be classified namely thyrostatics, surgery and radioiodine therapy. Thyrostatics are the compounds or medicines which are given in the case of thyroid imbalance. They have the effect of inhibiting the hormone production of thyroid gland thus bringing down the high levels of thyroid hormones. Surgery is done to remove some parts of the enlarged gland so that the gland size is reduced which will produce lesser amount of hormone. Surgery is generally done in the cases where medicines or radioiodine methods can not be as effective like in cases of Graves’s disease or due to some other reasons. In the therapy of Radio Iodination radioactive, Iodine is administered to the patient. The compound is given in the form of pills or liquid. The radioactive compound is absorbed by the gland and the strong radioactive nature of the compound tends to terminate the hyperactivity of the gland.
Major causes for overactive Thyroid: Overactive Thyroid is attributed to three main causes namely Graves’ disease, Toxic condition arising out of Adenoma of thyroid and Mult-nodulated toxic goiter. Patients’ caretakers must be attentive and watchful to see for the signs of under activity of the thyroid gland after the thyrocare therapies. These signs may include fatigue and general weakness, pale, rough skin, dry hair or hair loss, susceptibility to cold, abnormal menses, depression and muscular cramps etc. If they find any such signs then they must consult the for the hypo condition. This can be easily cured by supplementing the hormone externally. Similarly in the case of surgery if larger part of gland is removed then this makes the whole gland underactive which also causes hypothyroidism.
