Low thyroid

Low Thyroid Symptom: The condition of low thyroid symptom is also known as hypothyroidism. It can be due to various factors like abnormal functioning of thyroid gland specifically it’s under activity resulting in lesser production of the hormones and hence low thyroid levels. Some times corrective treatment therapies for hyperthyroidism (over activeness of thyroid glands) can also cause low thyroid levels. This can be due to the mistake in calculating the right dosage of the Radio-Iodine which can suppress the activity of the thyroid gland. Likewise in the case of medicinal therapy overdose may also suppress the gland’s hormonal activity. Surgery can also hamper the proper functioning of the gland if an excessive portion of the gland is removed which leaves a small portion of the hormone producing gland thereby reducing the thyroid hormone levels. There are various symptoms of indicating low Thyroid Levels like Slow heart rate, Migraine , Slowed speech, Sluggish Reflexes, Urinary, Dry puffy Skin , hair loss, depression (in the elderly) , weight gain, muscle cramps , difficulty in pregnancy, dietary difficulties(constipation and anemia) etc. For such reasons the Low thyroid condition is also called a very good impersonator of a lot of diseases.
Low Thyroid Hormone levels and its interpretations: In normal human adult the levels of thyroid hormone have been given below:
Adult Reference Ranges:
T4 = 5.6-13.7 ug/dl (mcg/dl)
FT4 = 0.8-1.5 ng/dl
T3= 87-180 ng/dl
FT3 = 230-420 pg/d;
TSH = 0.4-4.5 mIU/L (mU/L)
If there are low Thyroid levels from these standard levels it may give rise to thyroid related abnormalities. If the drift is on the higher side then the arising condition is called hyper thyroidism which means excess of thyroid hormones. If the drift is on the lower side then the condition arising from it is called Hypo thyroidism or the deficiency of the thyroid hormone. The worsened cases of hypo thyroidism my lead to a disease called Hashimoto’s Disease.
Functions of thyroid and the impact of Low Thyroid: Thyroid is a major metabolic hormone which governs a number of physiological activities. It can be said that thyroid hormones are the actual catalysts which are regulators of the body’s metabolism. As the thyroid hormones are extensively involved in a number of metabolic activities even their slightest imbalance can be held responsible for the widespread chain reaction of a number of metabolic processes. Low thyroid affects normal functions of the body. The major impacts are over energy levels, activity, alertness, mood and general well being. Major metabolic activities which are affected by thyroid imbalance are: Optimum absorption and utilization of vitamins, Protein Metabolism Carbohydrate metabolism, fat metabolism , muscular activity, neural activity, cardio vascular system, functions of mitochondria and digestive functions, oxygen usage, secretion of other hormones, reproduction and sexual health and various other physiological processes which medical science is yet to explore.
Diet imbalance & cramps by Low Thyroid Levels:Low thyroid levels often disguise as other common diseases as in case of diet imbalance and muscular cramps. People tend to think that the person’s ill health is due to improper dietary habits or pregnancy but the actual reason is deficiency of the Thyroid hormone. Research has been done for low thyroid levels in dogs. Thyroid deficiency can be cured by means of supplements which can make up for the deficit of thyroid. The most common form of supplement is levothyroxine which is a synthetic form of thyroxin which can be administered on daily basis. In addition, Iodine supplements in the form of Iodized salts can also be very helpful.
