Behavior chart

Free behavior chart: Parents consider it their primary duty to make sure that they teach their children good behavior. Nevertheless, constant monitoring is not as easy as it sounds. Hence, a child behavior chart has been devised to solve this problem. This behavior chart helps to keep constant track of your child’s behavior, and can be downloaded free of cost from the Internet.

Let us see how the free behavior chart helps parents in monitoring as well as modifying the behavior of their kids:

Using printable child behavior charts: Using child behavior charts is very easy. These charts can be obtained from various websites dedicated to the mental development of children. These child behavior charts are printable, so you can print one out and set it up to be used weekly. Parents can use the same behaviors mentioned in the printable chart, or modify them by adding new ones in the behavior chart. Since the behavior chart is freely printable, parents do not have to worry about creating or purchasing one.

A child behavior chart is set up with a list of good and bad behavior, and there is a rating for each. You can award points or tokens for each behavior. Good behavior receives positive points and negative points are given for bad behavior. Proper management, i.e. daily rating of the behavior chart has to be done. Parents can also make a bonus column for those behaviors that have received positive rating consistently. At the end of the week, after totaling the points, if the child has more positive points than negative ones, reward him/her accordingly.

Child behavior chart: A child behavior chart is a visual reward system. It helps parents to identify their child’s positive and negative behavior patterns. It assists them to work on improving bad behavior and polishing the good ones. Parents can design a child behavior chart, listing the behavior that they want to concentrate on, and the consequences and rewards. You can list as many behaviors as you think should be kept track of, however, it’s best to minimize the list for younger children. Essentially, the list should be based on how much your child can handle.

It is very important to involve your child when listing the behaviors, and deciding on rewards and consequences. It will be even better if your chart has an agreement contract, i.e. both you and your child sign the points, and the rewards/consequences given. You can even decide on awarding rewards according to different scales, depending on the number of points accumulated throughout the week. For example 10-20 points can be rewarded with chocolates/ice cream, 21-30 points, gadgets/toys, and 30 points and above, a weekend outing.

Behavior modification chart: A behavior chart not only records behavior, but also helps in modification. Modifying behavior means that parents have to be consistent. The rewards and consequences will help a child understand that good behavior will be rewarded, and bad behavior reprimanded. A child behavior chart helps parents in modification of their behavior, provided proper records are kept.

Parents are advised to be firm and consistent with the rewards as well as consequences, according to that agreed upon while planning the behavior chart. Inconsistency by parents results in the failure of the system.
