Joseph Campbell - the founder of Campbell soup: Campbell Soup has had an illustrious history behind its origination. Campbell Soup was originally known as Anderson & Campbell Preserve Company. Joseph Campbell and Abraham Anderson in New Jersey started the company in 1869, which was originally a fruit preserve manufacturing unit. In 1877, Anderson pulled out of the business and Campbell bought Anderson’s share as well, and expanded his business line including ketchups, salad dressing, mustard and other sauces.
However, the future of Campbell Soups changed when Arthur Dorrance took over the business from Joseph Campbell in 1894. Three years later, Arthur hired his nephew John Dorrance, who held a Ph.D and a degree in chemistry. John Dorrance noticed that the sales were not going up although the soup was priced reasonably. He soon found out that the reason behind this was the shipping charges, which were more because soup cans were heavy and big, and so needed more space. John Dorrance then started to work upon removing the heaviest content in the soup, water, and thus for the first time in the history of soup, condensed soup was launched, reducing the prices of soup enormously.
Campbell - the soup company: Although Campbell has many signature items, soup remains the company’s mainstay. Campbell, in fact, came into the limelight because of its condensed soups. Therefore, Campbell named its company, Campbell Soup. The company realizes that being in the food industry, a lot of responsibility is placed on its shoulders to deliver quality and healthy food, which it has fulfilled. In addition, the company went above and beyond its defined role and has introduced the Campbell’s Center for Nutrition and Wellness, where nutritional information and tips are given along with recipes that are not only tasty but nutritious as well.
The goodwill of the company does not stop here. For the past 3 decades Campbell Soup has been helping millions of children by awarding free educational equipment in return for Campbell can labels. Currently, 75,000 schools and other educational organizations are registered with Labels for Education, and more than 42,000 students benefit out of this program.
The history of Campbell kids: Grace Wiederseim, wife of John Dorrance, designed the famous ad campaign for Campbell Soups, featuring the twin kids that made it a household name. Initially, the twins (a boy and a girl) were drawn as an ordinary boy and a girl. In the ensuing years, however, the Campbell soup ads saw the kids appearing in various personas of from the sports field, police officers, sailors and other personalities from various professions.
