Bantam Chicken Breed: A breed of bantam chicken is any small or miniature fowl. Bantams have proportionally larger heads and longer wings than other larger breeds. Many of the large chicken breeds have a bantam counterpart, generally referred to as a miniature. They are usually one-fifth to one-quarter in size of the standard breed, with all of the standard breed's characteristics. Some examples of breeds which have bantam chicken breed are bantam counterparts are the Plymouth Rock, the Australorp, and Wyandotte. But a true bantam has no standard sized counterpart. Examples of true bantams include Pekin bantam, the Dutch bantam, the Belgian bantam, the Rosecomb, and the Sebright. The Silkie bantam is the only breed of bantams which has black pigmented skin. The feathers are without the usual forms of webs. They are fluffy and lack adhesion of the barbs to one another which gives the appearance of down or silky hair, hence the name silken or Silkie. Another distinguishing feature of this breed is the turquoise blue ear lobes. The Cochin bantam which is known as the Pekin bantam outside USA is famous for an excessive plumage that covers leg and foot. This chicken was originally bred only in China and later exported to Britain and America in mid 19th century.

Nankin Bantam Chicken: The Nankin bantam chicken is the ancient breed of fowl that is thought to be one of the oldest known bantam chickens. Evidences support that the bird arrived in England prior to the 1500’s. The Nankin breed used to be quite popular before the “hen–fever” craze of the mid–1800’. Chicken fanciers shifted their attention in creating new and exotic breeds which in turn caused the populations of older breeds to diminish in numbers. The Nankin still played an important role in the development of numerous bantam breeds, such as the Sebright. The nankins are still usefulness as a brood chicken – which is used to hatch eggs.
