History of Sydney Opera House: The Sydney Opera House has a very interesting history to its credit. The proposal was made to the Australian government, when Eugene Goossens, the director of the NSW State Conservatorium of Music lobbied for a bigger venue than the Sydney Town Hall for performing arts. The planning committee then announced an architectural design competition, to decide on the final design of the Opera House. John Utzon’s design was selected and accepted in 1955 and he arrived in Sydney in 1957, as chief architect of the project.
The opera house was built in three stages. Stage I included the upper podium. Stage II involved the building of the outer shells. Stage III, the final stage was dedicated to the interior. The political history of the Sydney Opera House is equally fascinating. By the beginning of stage III, the government changed and the new government declared that the undertaking was over-budgeted. Uzton resigned from his job and Peter Hall took over. The construction was finally completed in 1973 and Queen Elizabeth II inaugurated the spectacular building.
Sydney Opera House and the Harbor Bridge: Another interesting landmark of Australia, besides the Sydney Opera House, is the Sydney Harbor Bridge. It is credited with being the world’s largest, not longest, steel arch bridge. The top of the arch is 134 meters above the harbor. The fact that the Sydney Harbor Bridge overlooks the Sydney Opera House only adds to the charm of the bridge. The local people fondly call the bridge ‘coat-hanger’.
