Open University of Sri Lanka: Located at Nawala, Nugegeda, this university was set up to provide higher education to anyone above 18 years of age, with relevant basic qualifications. The Open University of Sri Lanka was established under the University Act No. 16 of 1978, and the External Services Agency (ESA) and Sri Lanka Institute of Distance Education (SEIDE) were also incorporated in its system. This University of Sri Lanka commenced its operations in 1980. Its present activities are based on the provisions of the Open University of Sri Lanka Ordinance No. 1 of 1990 and Universities Act. The academic and legal status of this educational institute is similar to any national university in Sri Lanka. It is the only recognized university of Sri Lanka, in which students can continue their education through distance education techniques. This institute consists of several divisions and four faculties, which include Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Engineering Technology and Natural Sciences.

University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka: This was established on 22 December 1979. The University Grants Commission is the apex body of the University of Sri Lanka. It operates within the structure of the Universities Act No 16 of 1978. Developing a university system of the highest quality, which keeps abreast with global trends, and is appropriate to national needs, comes under the purview of the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka. Its mission is to sustain and promote a widely accessible university system through the effective allocation of resources. This university system is accountable to the public, and is dedicated to high levels of professional training, research and learning. This in turn has to be relevant to the needs of the country, which it does by facilitating a partnership with the stakeholders of higher education. It is located in Ward Place, Colombo.

University of Colombo in Sri Lanka: This is the oldest University of Sri Lanka. It was founded as the University College, Colombo, and was affiliated to the University of London. Located in Colombo’s urban center, it is a sprawling complex that occupies 50 acres of prime land in the heart of the city. “College House”, which is the administrative hub of the university, is a well-known landmark in Colombo due to its period architecture. The motto of the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka is “Buddhih Sarvatra Bhrajate” (wisdom shines forth everywhere), which it strives to achieve by maintaining academic excellence. The Medical and Science departments are the oldest faculties here, and are considered the best in terms of resources and teaching staff. Several extra curricular activities are offered to the students to enhance their overall development. There is also a beautiful playground, and a modern gymnasium, which facilitates those interested in sports to develop their abilities. Students can express their musical or dramatic talents in the New Arts Theater. The location makes the university a “metropolitan university”, and students have easy access to theaters, libraries, sports complexes and information centers. The University of Colombo in Sri Lanka has a proud history of 150 years, and it still continues its endeavor to meet the challenge of maintaining its position as an educational institute, with an international and modern outlook.

University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka: The University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka has its origins, in the historic Vidyalankara Pirivena in 1875, which was a learning center for Buddhist priests. It was one of the two major national centers of higher traditional learning. It also heralded the first phase of national movement and resurgence. In the 1940s and 1950s, modern universities were established in Sri Lanka. Vidyalankara Pirivena became Vidyalankara University in 1959. Later, it turned into Vidyalankara campus of the University of Sri Lanka in 1972, and then, ultimately it became University of Kelaniya, in 1978. Today, this university of Sri Lanka is one of the leading establishments of learning, located outside the Colombo municipal limits. It has three institutes, seven locations, two major campuses and six faculties. Peradiniya, Moratuwa and Eastern universities are also in Sri Lanka.
