University Of Cape Town In South Africa: Established in 1829 under the name South African College, the University of Cape Town (UCT) is the oldest university in South Africa today. Initially an all boys’ school, it has now become a fully functional university and is among Africa's foremost institutions in research and teaching. A medical school and Department of Education were added in the years 1902 to 1918 and the engineering degrees formally started in 1918.It is presently located at the Groote Schuur Campus on Rhodes' Estate .The University of Cape Town in South Africa, is now a premier institution that is known for its untiring efforts in training students to meet the challenges of the world and bringing in internal transformation in the country.

Unisa-University Of South Africa: Formerly known as the University of the Cape of Good Hope, the University of South Africa (UNISA) dates back to almost 130 years back. It is a respected, comprehensive, and affable open distance learning institution.

It changed to the University of South Africa in 1916. Initially, it only offered to conduct examinations without conducting classes and yet it could confer degrees on successful candidates. It moved to Pretoria from Cape Town in 1916 and from then on, it incorporated several university colleges under it. The Division of External Studies was set up in February 1946.This acted as a catalyst in changing UNISA from just an examining body to a teaching university. It is among the premier universities in South Africa for distance education in the Western countries today.

It was internationally recognized in 2002, and was accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) in the United States.

University Of Pretoria In South Africa: The University of Pretoria in South Africa was founded in 1902. In 1906, it changed its name to the Transvaal University College (TUC). Classes were officially started at the university in 1908 in Arts and Sciences. The years 1917 to 1919 saw the establishment of the faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Trade and Public Administration and Faculty of Veterinary Science.

The University of Pretoria in South Africa was recognized as an independent university on 24th March 1930. The Faculty of Education was established in 1937 and the Faculty of Medicine followed shortly after, in 1943. However, the major faculties of Dentistry and Engineering were established in 1949 and 1956 respectively.

Over the years, it has come up with separate buildings for each faculty and has added several facilities like an amphitheater, sports grounds, a swimming pool, hostels and a virtual campus. It has also entered the field of distance education.

Rhodes University In South Africa: The Rhodes University in South Africa started in the college departments of four schools: St Andrew's, Grahamstown; Gill College, Somerset East; Graaff-Reinet College; and the Grey Institute, Port Elizabeth.

The Rhodes University College was founded on 31st May 1904 by an act of Parliament. This new university college prepared students for the university examinations of the University of the Cape of Good Hope.

In 1905, Rhodes moved its campus from St Andrew's to the Drostdy building, which it bought from the British Government. Rhodes became a constituent college of the new University of South Africa in 1918.

In 1938 the Carnegie Corporation made a Carnegie Library Fellowship available to train the first Rhodes Librarian. This was followed by a grant to buy books for the Rhodes Library. Rhodes University was inaugurated on March 10, 1951. Sir Basil Schonland, became the first Chancellor and Alty the first Vice Chancellor.

In 1985, the university got new buildings constructed that linked the central quadrangular area and the library.Among one of these buildings was the geography building, which completed the second quadrangle. The english and geography buildings along with the library form the third quadrangle, which completes the university's central area development.

Among the other notable universities in South Africa are Monash University, established in 1958; the University of the Witwatersrand established in 1922, and the University of Stellenbosch, earlier known as the Victoia College of Stellenbosch and several other colleges of Johannesburg.
