National University of Singapore: It is the oldest university in Singapore, and in terms of curriculum and student enrolment, remains the largest in the country. The National University of Singapore is a research-intensive and comprehensive educational institute. From 1 April 2006, it has turned into a guaranteed non-profit university company limited. Kent Ridge campus, situated at Kent Ridge in the southwest of Singapore, is the main site of this university. The Bukit Timah campus accommodates the law faculty. In 2005, the National University of Singapore celebrated its 100th birthday. It organized a yearlong centennial celebration that ended on 15 July 2006. This Singapore University has a semester based modular system for course conduction, and has adopted features of the American and British systems, such as small group teaching. Double degrees like Undergraduate degree in Arts & Social Sciences and Engineering, Arts & social sciences and Law, Business and Law, and Business and Engineering are some of the cross-disciplinary study programs offered here. This university also offers 115 masters, 27 single degree undergraduate, doctoral and graduate diploma programs, which are conducted by 13 faculties.

Singapore Management University: This University has recently moved from Singapore’s historical Bulkit Timah Campus to its permanent one, which is right in the heart of the city. The official incorporation of this university took place on 12 January 2005, and is Singapore’s first private university financed by the government. The Singapore Management University has devised an approach that prepares graduates for an age of supreme alternatives, that is focused other than having a broader-based education. It is modeled on USA’s top business school, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Curriculum of the Singapore University has been formulated to groom creative entrepreneurs and business leaders, who have the capability to excel in a dynamic and rapidly changing world. It is housing more than 3800 students, and consists of four schools that offer five undergraduate degree programs. The schools are, Lee Kong Chian School of Business, , the School of Economics and Social Sciences, the School of Accountancy and the School of Information Systems, which is in collaboration with the renowned Carnegie Mellon University. National University Hospital: This hospital is adjacent to the medical faculty of the National University of Singapore in Kent Ridge, and is used as a research center and a teaching hospital for the university. The National University Hospital is located within the Eastern boundary of the National Singapore university grounds. It is a tertiary referral hospital, with a full compliment of medical services like general medicine, pediatrics, various branches of psychiatry and surgery. The National University Hospital has 46 outpatient clinics and specialized service centers, along with an emergency department, and 70 hospital wards. This hospital also contains an orthodontic wing with three dental specialist clinics.

Nanyang University of Singapore: This used to be a Chinese university in Singapore. The idea of having a Chinese university in Singapore was initiated by Tan Lark Sye in 1953. He was the chairman of the Singapore Hokkien Association at that time. Donations were drawn from people from all walks of life, including Mr. Tan, who gave 5 million dollars. The Singapore Hokkien Association donated 500 acres of land in the western Jurong Area. Classes in Nanyang University of Singapore started on 15 March 1956. It offered courses in arts, science and commerce. The official opening ceremony of this university was held in 1958. Nanyang University of Singapore was merged with the University Of Singapore in 1980 to form the National University of Singapore. This was done due to the government’s desire to pool the resources of these two institutions into a single entity. It has the Nanyang Technological University as well.
